Humpback whales migrate through Cook Strait during May-August each year. Dolphin Watch Ecotours is a primary sponsor of a yearly Dept. of Conservation project that counts the numbers of whales, collects photo-ID and takes a tiny biopsy sample of their skin for DNA analyses. All of this information is vital towards their continued survival.
